Description
Since the 1868 classification of Mosel vineyards, Erdener Treppchen has been recognised as an erste lage (literally first vineyard). Its slopes are immensely steep, so that the grapes reach wonderful ripeness and concentration, especially the Spätlese (late picked) grapes which are left to hang on the vines an extra week or two. Its iron rich, red slate soils are renowned for giving the wine more structure, weight and power too. The wine is medium dry, but never feels sweet due to the incisive cut through of acidity. Add in the expertise and passion of the eccentric winemaker Dr Loosen and this wine is really one of the best. Notes of grapefruit, lime and blossom, with hints of cassis, this fine wine is a joy solo or with fish dishes.
