Description
See the word Syrah or Shiraz on a label and one thinks of France’s Rhône valley or bold Aussie reds. But the grape also thrives in Spain’s sun-baked Valencia’s vineyards. This is one from vines planted 600 metres high and 30 miles inland from the coast. So, while Spanish holidaymakers flock to Valencia’s beaches, the sunny arid hills further inland are a haven of calm. It’s there that this grape ripens to perfection, with cool nights lending balance and freshness. Add in winemaker Marta Martinez’s deft touch, working at a cellar that’s won Best Producer in Spain three times and the result is a ripe, intense red. Gorgeously smooth, but never overpowering. A perfect glass on its own or with spicy chorizo and bean stew, roast pork or sausages.
