Tasting Notes “As the price may suggest there ain’t a lot of this around but to see Hakushu at its most robust try and find a bar with a bottle.” – Dave Broom Whisky Advocate Or alternatively just come to Harvey Nichols. With its “superb harmony and balance” the exceedingly rare Hakushu 25 Year Old was crowned Best Japanese Single Malt at the World Whiskies Awards 2019. It’s also loved by Jim Murray who described it as “a malt which is impossible not to be blown away by” and awarded it an enormous 93 points. The beauty of this 25 Year Old is that they’ve ramped up the Sherry influence the smoke and the weight without losing any of the elegance of the Hakushu style. Rhubarb crumble and custard walnuts oolong tea olive oil strawberry jam marmalade chocolate orange pine needles spearmint chewing gum wood smoke ginger biscuits and vanilla all stuffed into the pocket of a leather apron hung on the back of a door in a carpenter’s workshop. This is one of the most intriguing flavour profiles you’ll find anywhere in the wide world of whisky. Produced at Suntory’s historic mountain distillery Hakushu is one of Japan’s leading single malt whiskies and was only the second in their portfolio. Hailing from the untouched forests and pure waters at the base of Mount Kaikomagatake in Yamanashi prefecture stylistically Hakushu is a herbal fresh and gently smoky expression and is a favourite of whisky connoisseurs mixologists and lovers of gastronomy.
